We envision a future free from sexual violence
The Alliance Against Sexual Violence (The Alliance) leads New York’s mission to end sexual violence through training, prevention programming, research, and policy advocacy. Until we end sexual violence, we will be here for all survivors and the organizations that serve them.
The work of preventing and responding to sexual violence happens at every level — from Albany, to exam rooms, classrooms, courtrooms, and rape crisis programs across New York. It’s led by the people doing it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. And behind every frontline worker, there needs to be a system that supports them, especially in BIPOC, immigrant, LGBTQ+, and low-income communities who are most impacted by sexual violence and least served by existing systems.
About The Alliance
The Alliance sits at the intersection of the people on the ground and the systems they work in. Close enough to understand what a crisis counselor is up against, and at the table in Albany to make sure their needs are heard. We work to prevent violence, train professionals, drive research, and advocate for funding.
While our partners provide direct services to survivors, we strengthen the systems and professionals they depend on — seeing the whole picture to make sure support reaches the right places. Because all survivors, no matter their zip code, deserve care that is consistent, coordinated, and informed. They deserve professionals who are trained, fairly compensated, and supported. And they deserve more than a system that responds to harm — they deserve one that works to prevent it from happening in the first place.
Our History
Every community experiences sexual violence differently — and the organizations responding to it face challenges shaped by their city, their systems, and the people they serve. In 1999, rape crisis program leaders in New York City recognized that their programs could be stronger if they coordinated, shared what they learned, trained together, and pushed for policy built around the specific realities of their work — especially in the communities that need it most.
The Alliance became a bridge between programs, policymakers, and the communities they serve. Over 25 years, our impact grew: millions in state funding secured, thousands of professionals trained, and programs working directly in youth groups, nightlife venues, and campuses across the city.
Building on that foundation, The Alliance was entrusted with helping strengthen systems across New York State — bringing the same principles to every corner of New York. Every program from the South Bronx, to the Finger Lakes, the Southern Tier, the North Country deserves that support — an organization committed to understanding their community deeply, and advocating for what it needs.
